The artwork

In New in Town, Mulaney contrasts childhood preparations for quicksand with its absence from adult life. The imagined danger fills a towering sand-lettered hillside while the everyday road beside it continues undisturbed.

The scene

New in Town (2012), childhood anxiety / quicksand routine

Mulaney remembers cartoons making quicksand seem like a major adult-life hazard. He prepared mentally for it instead of ordinary adult problems such as relatives asking to borrow money. As an adult he has never encountered it, or even heard of practical quicksand warnings on a road route.
