The artwork
The quicksand Mulaney feared as a child becomes a giant word dissolving into sand beside an ordinary highway. The outsized imagined threat and the calm road preserve the routine’s anticlimax.
The scene
New in Town (2012), childhood anxiety / quicksand routine
Mulaney remembers cartoons making quicksand seem like a major adult-life hazard. He prepared mentally for it instead of ordinary adult problems such as relatives asking to borrow money. As an adult he has never encountered it, or even heard of practical quicksand warnings on a road route.
