A van full of anticipation receives the father’s one-item order in Mulaney’s drive-through story. Monumental serif words, an isolated cup and a road bending away carry the joke’s coldly controlled reversal.

A van full of children chants for McDonalds. Their father turns into the drive-through, apparently granting the wish, but orders a single black coffee only for himself and keeps driving. The adult narrator appreciates the perfectly cold reversal. A later callback repeats the selected sentence exactly.
