“NOBODY CHOOSES TAN.”

Louis observes a battered tan car with a garbage bag taped over a broken window. He imagines accumulated troubles: cancelled insurance, a broken window and the improvised repair. He argues the colour was assigned rather than chosen. The surrounding dark passage concerns people's persistence through miserable lives; the selected line targets involuntary, defeated ownership.
