The artwork

Bashir tells Garak the story of the boy who cried wolf, intending to make a point about honesty. Garak draws a different lesson: deception fails when it becomes predictable. In Deep Space Nine’s “Improbable Cause,” the familiar fable becomes a dry exchange about trust and the habits of a practiced liar. A calling shepherd boy, one distant village and a wolf approaching the flock bring that unsettling counter-moral into a textured hillside composition.

The scene

Improbable Cause · Season 3, Episode 20

Bashir tells Garak the boy-who-cried-wolf fable after Garak complains about not being believed. Bashir intends a lesson about honesty; Garak takes it as advice to vary a lie instead.
