The artwork

A plain bucket hat becomes the focus of a perfectly timed insult in Shane Gillis’s Beautiful Dogs. The joke follows a moment of borrowed confidence outside a hotel, punctured by a passing stranger’s casual remark.

The scene

Beautiful Dogs — Australian goths and bucket hat

Shane is self-conscious about wearing a bucket hat. His friend reassures him before they leave the hotel. On the sidewalk a goth in black clothing takes and replaces the hat, then insults him while continuing to walk. Shane initially mistakes the familiarity for friendship, has no effective comeback, and remembers the humiliation for months.
